About Us
Coden United Methodist Church was started in 1889 by Reverend Frank Alexander on a site near Portersville Bay. The original church building was washed from its blocks by the 1906 hurricane. In 1907, the congregation moved to its present location on the Coden Bayou on land donated by the Bay Shore branch of the M&O Railroad. At one time Coden was a part of a seven church charge encompassing the south part of Mobile County. Churches included in the charge were Grand Bay, Bayou la Batre, Irvington, Fowl River, Heron Bay, Dauphin Island, and Coden.
Dedicated in 1968, the present sanctuary has been flooded by four major hurricanes. Land donated by Mr. Alden Davis will be the site of the new Coden United Methodist Church. Located on Hemley Road in Coden, the site is well above the flood plain.
